Uses:
Ash is used for furniture, cooperage, handles, oars, vehicle parts,
flooring, baseball
bats, and other athletic goods.
Description:
Commercial white ash is a group of species that consist mostly of white ash
and green ash, although blue ash is also included. Heartwood of commercial
white ash is brown; the sapwood is light colored or nearly white.
Second-growth trees have a large portion of sapwood. Old-growth trees, which
characteristically have little sapwood, are scarce.
Range:
The major species of ash grow in the eastern half of the United States.
Physical Properties:
Second-growth commercial white ash is particularly sought because of the
inherent qualities of the wood; it is heavy (42lbs./cu.ft.), strong, hard,
stiff, and has high resistance to shock.
